India plays a vital role in tourism as it has 36 out of 1,092 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. India’s rising middle class and increasing disposable incomes have supported the continued growth of domestic and outbound tourism. Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) increased to 5.97 million from January to July 2018, achieving a growth rate of 7.3% year-on-year. The total contribution of the travel and tourism sector to India’s GDP is expected to increase from ₹15.24 trillion in 2018 to ₹32.05 trillion by 2028. In 2018, India was ranked 7th among 184 countries in terms of travel and tourism’s total contribution to GDP.

The Indian government has recognized the country’s potential in the tourism industry and has taken several steps to make India a global tourism hub.

A major initiative planned by the Government of India is to achieve a 1% share of the world’s international tourist arrivals by 2020 and a 2% share by 2025. The Indian government has allocated ₹1,250 crore for the integrated development of tourist circuits under the Swadesh Darshan and Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASAD) schemes.
